A homeowner opens ChatGPT and types: “I need to replace the heating and cooling in a 1,900-square-foot house. Compare heat pumps and gas furnaces, and tell me what to ask an installer.” ChatGPT walks her through efficiency, upfront cost and maintenance. She asks three follow-up questions. By the end she knows what she wants and is ready to request quotes. If you install heating and cooling systems in her area, you were not part of that conversation. She never searched Google, never scrolled past your ad, and never saw your name.
That moment is now something advertisers can show up in. OpenAI has started selling ads inside ChatGPT, and since May 2026 businesses can buy them through partners or a self-serve Ads Manager that OpenAI is opening gradually. This guide explains what ChatGPT Ads are, how they relate to GEO, who should try them now, and how DataDrivenHQ runs them so every dollar can be traced to a lead.
What ChatGPT Ads are
ChatGPT Ads are paid placements shown to people while they use ChatGPT. OpenAI began with a limited pilot, and on May 5, 2026 announced that advertisers can buy ads through partners or a new beta self-serve Ads Manager. Inside Ads Manager a business can register as an advertiser, add payment details, set budgets, bids and pacing, upload ads, launch and manage campaigns, and view performance. OpenAI says it is opening access gradually, from small businesses and startups to global brands. Sign-up happens at ads.openai.com.
Two rules shape the whole format. Ads are clearly labeled and kept separate from ChatGPT’s answers. And OpenAI says ads do not influence what ChatGPT says. The answer is the answer; the ad sits beside it, marked as an ad.
The platform is moving quickly. In October 2026, OpenAI said ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week, and announced a visual ad format, images showing product inspiration or usage, to be tested during image generation for Free and Go plan users in the US with an initial group of advertisers. Formats and access will keep changing, so we confirm what is available to each account instead of assuming.
How they differ from Google and Meta ads
On Google, intent comes from a search query, and advertisers bid on keywords. On Meta, you reach people based on who they are and what they have shown interest in, often before they are looking for anything. In ChatGPT, intent comes from a conversation: a person describing a problem in their own words, asking follow-ups, weighing options. That is often more context than a three-word search ever gives you.
What OpenAI has not published is a keyword auction or a long menu of targeting controls like the ones Google and Meta expose. OpenAI’s ad system controls delivery decisions, meaning it decides when and where an ad appears. You control the budget, the bid, the creative and the destination. Anyone promising to put your ad on a specific prompt is describing something OpenAI has not announced.
ChatGPT Ads vs GEO
GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the organic side of AI visibility. It is the work that makes your business a source AI tools understand and mention: clear service pages, consistent business information, reviews, structured data, and content that answers real questions. When GEO works, ChatGPT names you inside its answer, and nobody paid for that mention.
ChatGPT Ads buy a labeled placement next to the answer. They cannot buy you into the answer itself, because OpenAI keeps the two apart. So the channels do different jobs:
They work best together. Someone who sees your ad, visits your site, and then asks ChatGPT about your company is better served when your site and reputation give the model good material to work with. Running ads without GEO means paying for attention you could partly earn. Running GEO without ads means waiting while a competitor buys the spot beside the answer.
Who ChatGPT Ads fit right now
This is a new channel in beta, so treat it as a test, not a foundation. It tends to suit businesses that look like this:

How buying ChatGPT ads works
There are two ways in. You can buy through one of OpenAI’s partners, or use the self-serve Ads Manager, which is in beta and rolling out gradually. Ads Manager is the route most small businesses will take, since it puts budgets, bids, creative and reporting directly in your hands.
CPC vs CPM, budgets and pacing
The pilot started with CPM bidding only, meaning you paid per thousand impressions. OpenAI has since added CPC bidding and now supports both. With CPC, you are charged only when someone clicks. For most small businesses whose goal is leads, CPC is the sensible starting point: you pay for people interested enough to visit your site, and the cost lines up with the result you care about. CPM makes more sense when the goal is awareness, such as a launch or a new location, and you are comfortable paying for views rather than visits.
Ads Manager also lets you set budgets and pacing. Pacing controls how quickly the budget is spent over a campaign, which matters on a new platform where you want data to arrive steadily rather than in one burst. Start with a defined test budget and test window. Decide in advance what result would justify spending more, and hold to it. A new channel earns a bigger budget by producing leads at an acceptable cost, not by being new.
Writing ads for people mid-decision
Someone who sees your ad in ChatGPT is usually in the middle of working something out. They have a problem, they have been asking questions, and they are narrowing their options. Ads that work in that setting read like a useful next step, not an interruption.
The landing page has to answer the question
The conversation that led to the click was about a question, and your landing page needs to answer it. If someone was comparing heat pumps and furnaces, a page that only says “Call us today” wastes the click. Give them the comparison in your own words, explain what affects the price, show proof such as reviews and licensing, and make the next step obvious: a short form, a tap-to-call button or a booking calendar. That clarity also helps AI tools understand your business, one more place where ads and GEO overlap.
Measurement done right
OpenAI launched a Conversions API and pixel-based measurement for actions such as purchases, leads and sign-ups, and in October 2026 it expanded its measurement integrations and attribution partners. The pixel runs on your website and records when a visitor from an ad takes an action. The Conversions API sends conversion events from your own systems, which holds up better when browsers block scripts and can report results that happen after the visit.
We set up both where they fit, then connect every lead to the CRM so the story does not end at the form. A click is not a customer, and a form fill is not revenue. Judge campaigns on cost per lead, cost per qualified lead and the revenue those leads produce in your pipeline, not on click-through rate. Then compare those numbers against Google and Meta on the same terms before moving budget between channels.
Privacy is built in. Advertisers get aggregated performance insights and never get access to individual conversations. You will not see what a specific person asked ChatGPT, and neither will we. Your measurement comes from what happens on your website and in your CRM after the click, which is where the numbers that matter live anyway.
Brand safety
OpenAI’s stated principles for ads are that ChatGPT’s answers stay independent, conversations stay private, and users stay in control. In practice, ads are labeled and kept separate from answers, and placement guardrails keep ads out of emotionally vulnerable, sensitive or unsuitable conversations. Policies are enforced through automated review plus human oversight.
Qualifying advertisers can also use Negative Phrases to keep their ads away from specific contexts. A pest control company may not want to appear near conversations about a sick pet. A law firm may want distance from certain topics entirely. When an account qualifies, we build a Negative Phrases list during setup and add to it as we learn.
Watch out for lookalike apps
Whenever a platform opens to advertisers, imitators follow. In 2026, marketers reported unsolicited TestFlight invites for apps branded with names like “OpenAI AdsGPT,” published by developers with generic “Platform OpCo, LLC” style names that have nothing to do with OpenAI.
How DataDrivenHQ runs ChatGPT Ads
DataDrivenHQ is a woman-owned agency founded in 2023, based in San Diego County, California, and serving businesses nationwide. We already run Google and Meta ads, SEO and GEO, websites, social media, AI lead generation and CRM automations, so ChatGPT Ads plugs into a system we operate every day. To be plain about it: DataDrivenHQ is not an OpenAI partner. We manage campaigns through the public self-serve Ads Manager, the same one any business can sign up for.
We set up the advertiser account in your business’s name, with your payment method on file, and you grant us access to manage it. If you ever leave, the account, its history and its data stay with you. Because Ads Manager is still rolling out, the first step is confirming your business can get access. Before anything goes live, we install the pixel, connect the Conversions API where it fits, and agree on what counts as a conversion.
We write the ads and build or adjust landing pages so each click arrives at a page that answers the question behind it. Once campaigns are live, we review them weekly: cost per lead, lead quality, pacing, bid type and which offers people respond to. We cut what is not working and move budget toward what is. Every lead flows into your DDHQ CRM, which includes a unified inbox, pipelines, automations and reporting. Automations text and email new leads right away and alert your team, because a person deciding today may have moved on by tomorrow.
Reports show leads, cost per lead and revenue next to your other channels, so you can see whether ChatGPT Ads earn their place. Our management fee is quoted up front, before any work starts. Ad spend is billed by OpenAI directly to you, so you always know exactly what went to the platform and what went to us.
Start with an honest conversation
ChatGPT Ads are early, and the platform is changing month to month. That is a reason to test carefully, with real tracking and a clear budget, rather than ignore the channel or bet the business on it. If your customers already ask AI tools for advice before they buy, book a free call. We will look at your offer, your tracking and your eligibility, and tell you straight whether ChatGPT Ads belong in your plan now or later.
